The University of Queensland Mayne Medical School is a heritage-listed UQ building located in Herston. Built in 1938-39, the building was requested after several cries for a medical school were finally heard by the Forgan Smith government, and the University of Queensland Faculty of Medicine was founded. Originally named University of Queensland Medical School, it was upon the deaths of brother and sister Dr James O'Neil Mayne (1939) and Mary Emelia Mayne (1940) that their estates were entrusted to the medical school which then took their name in recognition of this gift. Their estates still fund the school to this day through assets such as the Brisbane Arcade, which they owned and funded.
